Federal Battery Rebate Program

Cheaper Home Batteries - Up to 30% Up-Front Discount

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government provides an up-front discount of around 30% on eligible home and small-business batteries. The discount is delivered via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the expanded SRES and is applied on your invoice by the retailer/installer.

πŸ‘₯

Who Can Claim

  • Households and small businesses installing a battery with new or existing rooftop solar
  • Off-grid installations also eligible
  • Battery system must be VPP-capable if grid-connected (joining a VPP is optional)
  • Installed by Solar Accreditation Australia accredited installer
  • Products must be on the CEC approved lists
  • One supported battery system per premises
πŸ”‹

Battery Size Limits

  • Eligible nominal capacity: 5-100 kWh
  • Discount applies to: First 50 kWh of usable capacity per installation
  • Stacking modules is fine if the combined system meets the 5 kWh minimum and is CEC-approved
  • Typical home systems range from 8-15 kWh, maximizing rebate benefits
  • Systems above 50 kWh still receive the full discount on the first 50 kWh
  • Usable capacity is determined by the manufacturer's specifications, not nominal capacity
πŸ’°

How to Get It

  1. Get quotes from CEC-listed products and SAA-accredited installers
  2. Your retailer applies the discount up-front by assigning the battery STCs
  3. Keep documentation: quote, invoice, CEC product IDs, certificate of electrical compliance

You can choose to keep and sell the STCs yourself via the CER REC Registry, but most customers assign them to the retailer for an immediate invoice discount.

Discount Rates by Install Year

The discount is based on the battery's usable kWh and a yearly STC factor

Install Year Approx $/kWh STCs per kWh
2025 $372 9.3
2026 $336 8.4
2027 $296 7.4
2028 $260 6.5
2029 $224 5.6
2030 $188 4.7

Values based on $40/STC at the Clearing House and government guidance. Actual discount may vary.

For 2025, the rate is 9.3 STCs/kWh. With the STC Clearing House price currently $40, that's about $372 per kWh (before any retailer admin fees).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need solar to claim the federal battery discount?

Yes β€” the battery must be installed with new or existing rooftop solar. Stand‑alone batteries that only store grid energy are not eligible.

Is VPP participation mandatory?

No. On‑grid systems must be capable of VPP participation (right hardware & comms), but actually joining a VPP is optional.

How much will I save?

In 2025, the discount is roughly $372 per kWh of usable capacity (capped at 50 kWh). For example, an 8 kWh battery priced at $10,000 could see about a $3,000 discount before any retailer fees. Rates decline annually to 2030.

Can I combine with state programs?

Generally yes. Many households stack the federal discount with any state rebates/loans and optional VPP bill credits. Check current rules in your state.

What documents should I keep?

Quote, final invoice showing the discount, product datasheets/IDs, installer accreditation, and the certificate of electrical compliance.
